Bayport has been active in Tanzania since 2005 and today, it is the leading specialist unsecured credit provider for Tanzania’s formally employed. Ably guided by our experienced board, and with the assistance of our partners, Bayport has made unsecured credit a reality for the Tanzanian people. Bayport has partnered with key companies in Tanzania that have Tanzanians’ best interest at heart. We have done this in order to give us a sound understanding of the people’s attitudes towards credit and to design products that meet these people’s needs. These partners include Equal Opportunity for All Trust Fund, National Investments Company Limited and Africa Yetu. Together, these partners represent the interests of thousands of Tanzanian shareholders.
Bayport Financial Services Uganda’s operations commenced in 2005. Initially, it started out as a collaboration between Mr Charles Mbire, one of Uganda’s leading promoters of investment (and prominent businessman) and Bayport Management Limited. Uganda is currently experiencing encouraging economic growth and Bayport Uganda is perfectly positioned to take advantage of this as Uganda’s leading retail credit provider. However, the road was a challenging one, in view of the uniquely decentralised nature of Uganda’s civil service payroll system and a credit market that has historically been very competitive. Despite these challenges, Bayport’s innovative business model soon saw the company flourish. Today, many local communities have partnered with us, giving us an even better understanding of the Ugandan people’s unique requirements.
Bayport is involved in several community projects to empower the Ugandan people, by way of its extensive corporate social responsibility programme. This has been as diverse as giving relief to landslide and flood victims in Eastern Uganda and other programmes that cover education, health, business, agriculture, sports and youth. We have supplied tracksuits to the Uganda Prisons’ Maroons Football Club and we have also donated Ushs 1,000,000 to MUMYO (Mukono Multipurpose Youth Organisation), an NGO that strives to promote the wellbeing and rights of the youth, while helping to alleviate poverty in rural areas. Our contribution was used to pay the school fees of orphans, the construction of MUMYO’s future orphan support centre and to start income-generating ventures for AIDS support groups.
The Zambian division of Bayport Financial Services was established in 2002. Initially, Bayport had worked together closely with the Mineworkers’ Union of Zambia and focused mainly on the mining sector around the Copper Belt. The availability of credit to mineworkers met with immediate success as Bayport again strove to understand the needs of their clients, first and foremost. We soon branched out into the civil service, where Bayport quickly established a reputation for hassle-free, responsible credit. Our current clients in Zambia include a number of private sector and multi-national employers, as well as government employees. Bayport has become a corporation with one of the largest financial services infrastructures in Zambia in only six years. The Chief Executive Officer of Bayport Zambia is Justin Chola and, together with Martha Akapelwa (Executive Director), they have led by example to make Bayport the industry benchmark in Zambia.
We are also extensively involved in community development and upliftment in Zambia, especially in the fields of primary healthcare and education. In terms of education, we pay particular attention to support programmes and capacity building, which explains our ongoing support of the Teachers Union. For example, we have sponsored both sporting days and non-core curricular activities, like the Chipata Festival. We also sponsor children whose parents cannot afford their school fees and last year we have sponsored 21 orphans’ school fees. We have also supported the construction the new wing of the Zambian National Service New Hospital. Our support of all these initiatives is firmly rooted in the belief that a society should be both healthy and educated to prosper.
Bayport Financial Services not only offer tailor-made Bayport financial solutions, but also make a big difference to the lives of the people in every country where we do business.
